Livistona is a genus of palms (family Arecaceae),
having "palmate" leaf which has lobes fanning
out-from a common point. Those indigenous to
Vietnam are rather slow growing. Each year, a
tree grows about more 12 centimeters tall and
forms more 12 leaves. Mature trees reach a
maximum height of only 10 to 12 meters and 25
centimeters in diameter when they are more than
100 years old.
Thriving both in low and sloping land,
withstanding both rainy and desert conditions,
tropical climate makes Vietnam Livistona so
distinctive: as hard as ironwood; water tolerant
and not easily bothered by insects or disease.
Traditionally, full-grown tree is used by upland
people to build house. Mature leaves are used as
roofing. The trunk is commonly used as posts,
piles and poles. It can be split into strips for
flooring, siding and even handles of tools.
After so many years, these home items are still
strong and remain unchanged in appearance.
